Dig out the string lights this Thanksgiving weekend!

fancy up your windows this weekend, Inwood. we are about to show the world what inner city community holiday spirit really looks like.

yes, it is time again for Inwood Shines Bright!

are you free for about 30 minutes some time this week or next? we’re looking for locals to count the buildings on their block and post flyer’s in the lobbies and lamp posts. you give me a count, i’ll give you the flyers. the goal: one flyer in every lobby in Inwood. can we do it?

just so you know, cooper street thinks they are going to be the brightest in the neighborhood. aint that some shit? i’m fairly sure isham street is going to kick their ass with the most bling.

“Local homeless shelter seeking volunteers”

via Katy on The Upper Manhattan Experience:

Hi everyone,

Did you know that a local church provides shelter to the homeless? Are you interested in volunteering? The Good Shepherd shelter is a small, 6 bed shelter open Wed-Friday evenings for homeless women. This non-secular organization has been providing our guests with hospitality, a safe place to rest and share a meal for over 25 years. We would like to be able to be open Monday to Friday but we need more volunteers. Come join us.

We need volunteers for the shelter in many capacities:
1. Overnight volunteers- stay with our guests overnight generally from 715pm to 600 am.
2. Coordinate: make beds, set up for meals for our guests
3. Garden outside: watering, weeding, planting, keeping area tidy
4. We need help with PAINTING the shelter.

Anyone interested please email inwoodgoodshepherdshelter at gmail. We’re happy to answer any questions.

It’s a small way to make a huge difference.

Angel Figueroa introduces @InwoodSafety

On Feb 1st, Angel and his daughter saw the cops tend to a guy who was bloodied during a robbery in Isham Park. He immediately went on Twitter to tell us all what he saw, and quickly gathered a group of locals who were as furious as he is about the lack of policing in our neighborhood.

There is going to be a full story in the Manhattan Times, but you don’t need to wait that long to follow how this is developing. Angel created a twitter account called InwoodSafety (a spanish translated twitter acct will come soon as well), and if you ive up here and want to follow what people in our neighborhood are doing to make a difference, or get involved directly, you should follow/show support of this group. Read what the group is saying RIGHT NOW on the #InwoodSafety hashtag and watch your neighbors kick some ass.

if you are looking for a local community service project, this is it.

update: waiting to get more information for neighbors not on twitter but would like to participate and/or would like regular updates. stay tuned…

Community: The Neighborhood Cookie Project

this just in from the WaHi/Inwood parents group:

Hi All –
It’s a little late in the announcing, but it’s time again for the neighborhood Cookie Project. This is a great opportunity to have some baking fun with your kids (or just have an excuse to bake your favorite cookies!), and add a little joy into the hearts of people who could really use it.

Here’s the deal: the Washington Heights Ecumenical Food Pantry is a non-profit that serves the hungry right here in northern Manhattan. They give out groceries twice a week to over 900 families. For the past several years a whole local buncha folks have baked homemade cookies to include in the bags of groceries given out during Christmas week.

Here’s what you can do to do to help out:

1. Bake cookies and decorate them. Sturdy cookies work best (gingerbread, sugar, filled, etc.). Please do not include any cookies with peanuts or nuts in them, because some people have severe allergies.

2. Package your cookies four to a Ziploc bag. It’s okay to add a ribbon or other festive décor to the bags.

3. Deliver them to Simone Song Properties during the weekend of December 19th-20th or on Monday or Tuesday the 21st or 22nd. We’ll deliver them to the Food Pantry on Wednesday morning, in time to be included in the last groceries distributed before Christmas.

Last year we were able to deliver about 350 bags of cookies. This year the demands on the food pantry continue to grow, and it would be great to be able to provide even more. But whatever you can do to help out, please do! And do forward this announcement to anyone you know who might be interested.

Simone Song Properties is located at 241 Cabrini Blvd, right near the intersection with 187th St. There’s also an entrance on Cabrini.

Happy baking!

my husband has an amazing homemade sugar cookie recipe that we can work on.  im a fairly shitty cook, so for my own contribution i’ll buy a box of Betty Crocker cookies for $1.99 at CTown, add some oil & eggs and zip them up all pretty like.

if you have an hour tomorrow evening, try to squeeze this in – the kids will love it!

Community: Sponsor a Child This Holiday Season

when Bread and Yoga first opened, i questioned as to whether most of our community would be able to afford this wonderful addition to the neighborhood.  Marcela’s response can be read here.

so how thrilled were we when we saw this email last night? a holiday outreach project is *exactly* what we wanted to see. so very proud of Bread and Yoga for stepping up, and we hope that other new businesses will follow suit, quickly.

SPONSOR A CHILD PROGRAM
Commit to making a difference right here in your community.  Sponsor a child through Yoga, Art or Music this winter.

Bread and Yoga is partnering with Zena Group, a NYC not-for-profit arts organization, to sponsor low-income kids in our neighborhood.

Our after school programs include:

-    Drama & Yoga with Michelle Bernard for kids 4 to 7 years  old.
-    Kids Yoga with Stacey Linden for kids 7 to 10 years old.
-    Scribble Art Workshop with Sasha Schwartz for grades K-5
-    Little Songwriters’ Club with Christopher Wilson and Eric Nolan for  grades 2-5.

Donations are tax-deductible and will go towards funding a low-income child through one of our programs.  We are working with guidance counselors from local schools to identify kids that would benefit the most from what we offer.

Our classes focus on building strength, self-esteem, focus, concentration, independence and responsibility.  Children are introduced to ideas they wouldn’t normally be exposed to in their daily lives. This is an opportunity to change a child’s life.

Are you looking for a socially mindful holiday gift?  This year, sponsor a child!

Donations in any amount are welcome. Checks can be made out to Zena Group Theater, Inc. and mailed to:

Bread and Yoga
4951 Broadway, Suite 6

Volunteers Wanted: Inwoof Dog Wash fundraiser

Update:  event is postponed – still need volunteers once a new date is set!!

It’s that time of year again – Inwoof will be having another Dog Wash at Homer’s Dog Run on June 13th from noon to 4pm.  This year all the funds contributed will go towards the brand-spanking new dog pool just built especially for Inwood’s top dogs.

via Inwoof:

POOL UPDATE AND FUNDRAISING SUGGESTION

Many people have asked about Pay Pal or other online ways of contributing to the pool. We’re going to hold off on that until we get our own 501(c)(3) and bank account up here; it’s just too difficult to pull that one off right now.

So, how about resurrecting one of our most proven, successful fundraising ideas? Yes, that’s right — the dog shampoo-a-thon. People have been asking me to bring that one back anyway, since our event is cheaper than the groomer and a whole lot more fun.

For newcomers, the shampoo-a-thon is just what it sounds like. We get a bunch of volunteers (hint, hint, hint) to come and give dogs a bath for $10 per dog or $15 for two dogs. Their owners either bring their own towels, or the dogs air-dry. And this year, thanks to Julio’s deck, we can put the dogs up on top of that and save a whole lot of aching backs.

Can we get some volunteers for next Saturday, June 13 between noon and 4? Volunteers can either give the baths, or act as safety monitors. I will collect money and make sure that the volunteers rotate/change shifts so that no one person is doing all of the work. Please write to me offline at dogrundeb@… and let me know what you can do and what time you are available. Last but not least, I’ll need people to post flyers and get the word
out.

So join us for some good clean fun and fundraising on Saturday, June 13 from 12 – 4.

Proceeds from this activity will be expressly dedicated to the pool expenses, with anything over that going to the general operating fund.

Thanks.
Deb & Nick

P.S. If you know of people who don’t come into the run, we can still make accommodations to bathe their dogs – we’ll just stretch the hose over the fence. So pass the word to them too! Thanks.

You need to join the Inwoof group to access the threads, however, if you would like to volunteer with me (I will be shampooing from 3-4pm) without joining the group, please leave a comment and fill out your email address in the comment form and I will forward it to Deb, President of Inwoof and she will add you to the volunteer list.

If you are not able to volunteer, and would just like your dog washed, come over to the run between noon and 4.  If you like to make a donation and can’t make the run, please email dogrundeb at aol dot com
