can’t even tell you how excited i am that my husband is home from work today. he is our foodie, our shopper, our cook and our penny pinching jew. yea, i said it. when i was single and salaried, i threw money out the window for convenience. brand spanking overpriced new everything all the time. baller? or complete dickhead?
man, we could so use that money right now.
lessons learned the hard way, my husband has taught me not only how to not spend a full paycheck in someone’s resto, but how to make a delicious home cooked meal for 1/10 of the price.
the pink beans in the photo are 1 pound, usually 2/$3 and feeds our family of five on two meals. you can find this same exact bag at the dollar store on 207th for 99cents. we soak them overnight, add diced potatoes, calabaza, sofrito, smoked turkey (no pork allowed) a can of tomato sauce and whapata. half a pound for dinner and the other half in the freezer for the next time we are craving beans.
like tonight.
the produce gets tricky, because it’s more expensive. in our local supermarkets there is always a section of produce that is bagged “manager’s special.” it’s usually hidden in a corner, near the floor. must be used within 24 hours usually. this bag of 7 tomatoes cost $0.99, season and grill or bake, and we are set for another two meals.
