it’s amazing that we live in a society where having arts programs in our schools is optional. unfortunately for many New York City public schools, this is exactly the case. how can we truly cultivate imagination if basic art & music classes arent available to the next generation?
If it weren’t for the VH1 Save The Music program, my teenager would not be playing the three instruments he had to teach himself by ear because as a single mom i could not afford the private classes he really needed.
so when our friend Lizzi told us about a fundraiser her daughter’s school is having – it was a no brainer to post this to you guys and personally ask you for help to save the art program at Hamilton Heights Academy.
will you please buy a $10 ticket and help a child in this school live out their artistic dream? it’s okay if you can’t make it to the actual program – we would just like sell as many tickets as possible. all proceeds go to the arts program.
here’s a note from Lizzi’s husband on the Friends Of Hamilton Heights School website:
Our dream is to bring our beloved arts program back where it belongs at HHS!
Help turn this dream into a reality by attending our Spring talent show. Hamilton Heights families, teachers, and staff will be performing and you won’t want to miss it. Bring the whole family — fun for everyone! An evening beyond your wildest dreams!
Sunday, March 21, 2010
5:00-7:00 PM
Riverbank State Park Auditorium
Tickets are $10 each ($5 for children under 12) and will not be sold at the door. Save your seats now by clicking the large “buy tickets now” button to the left.
With your help, dreams can come true!
Classroom teachers have worked independently and with teaching artists and local organizations like the “Children’s Art Carnival” to encourage student creativity and provide outlets for self-expression. HHS students take pride in their art work and enjoy using their visual skills to connect the academic and social curriculum.
Our school has been severely affected by education budget cuts which have forced us to eliminate our prized and important art program. Art continues in classrooms thanks to our dedicated teachers but we have lost our Teaching Artists and our partnerships with Children’s Arts Carnival and Studio in a School. Here’s what your support can do for our students:
| $20 | A pack of pastel crayons for one student |
| $50 | Construction paper for one HHS classroom |
| $100 | Twenty scissors for one HHS classroom |
| $250 | One year’s worth of art instruction for one student |
| $500 | All supplies for a semester’s worth of art in one classroom |
| $1,000 | Monthly salary of a Teaching Artist |
Make a contribution of $100 or more and receive our world famous HHS T-shirt as a special gift!
support local arts for our young people and help spread the word!
Dear Community Leaders,
We need your help to find a group of dedicated young people interested in making a difference in their community.
People’s Theatre Project, a local organization that offers theatre opportunities for the community, is looking for 15 high school aged participants for a Free Teen Theatre Ensemble Program called “If I Ruled the World”.
The program runs for 12 Saturday afternoons from 1-4pm beginning March 6 and ending May 22nd at J. Hood Wright Recreation Center on 173rd St. & Ft. Washington Ave.
Attached is a flyer for your use and below is some more information on the program. Please email or call me if you know of any students that would be interested in participating. Please feel free to forward this email to your contacts as well!

People’s Theatre Project announces a new theatre ensemble program for youth in Washington Heights and Inwood facilitated by local author Karen Gormandy. The participants will work together for 12 Saturday afternoons beginning March 6th to create a theatre piece that explores the idea “If I Ruled the World.” The first 6 weeks of the program will consist of dialogue on local and global issues affecting the community, writing the theatre piece, as well as discussions with professional theatre artists from various disciplines. The second half of the program is devoted to rehearsal and production. Participants lead all aspects of production from marketing to production design and performing.
We are looking for a group of 15 local high school aged artists, actors, musicians, dancers, directors, producers, designers and activists to be part of an ensemble that asks questions, seeks answers and speaks their mind. No experience necessary!
Sincerely,
Bob Braswell

On Feb 1st, Angel and his daughter saw the cops tend to a guy who was bloodied during a robbery in Isham Park. He immediately went on Twitter to tell us all what he saw, and quickly gathered a group of locals who were as furious as he is about the lack of policing in our neighborhood.
There is going to be a full story in the Manhattan Times, but you don’t need to wait that long to follow how this is developing. Angel created a twitter account called InwoodSafety (a spanish translated twitter acct will come soon as well), and if you ive up here and want to follow what people in our neighborhood are doing to make a difference, or get involved directly, you should follow/show support of this group. Read what the group is saying RIGHT NOW on the #InwoodSafety hashtag and watch your neighbors kick some ass.
if you are looking for a local community service project, this is it.
update: waiting to get more information for neighbors not on twitter but would like to participate and/or would like regular updates. stay tuned…
i bumped into our super this morning while throwing out the trash, who, btw, was especially cheerful and smiley with me. it kinda threw me off for a second. why the friendly, homie?
the first thing that popped in my head was, “did we set aside cash in our holiday budget for his tip?”
perhaps im too suspicious for my own good.
frankly, our super has been attentive for the most part, except in the past year we have only needed him twice. one to fix a window, the other to unclog a toilet. (the guys blame my tampons, and i tell them to eat more fiber.)
so, question of the day: does the amount of work put in directly affect his holiday tip, or should we just give a set amount every year because he keeps our building especially clean?
how do you determine how much your super gets tipped, and how much do you give them?
gifts.com has a holiday tip guide… take a look. is it reasonable?
i cant even tell you how much i *swoon* over Inwood’s own Chris & Keith at onemonkeyshow. they have posted pictures from the National Equality March and i can’t even tell you… you just need to go over and see for yourself. simply amazing.
keith & chris
On a personal note:
I call us “The Husbands” – yet Keith and I have a very tenuous legal union. A Civil Union in New Jersey is nothing – it’s separate and unequal. Our Civil Union is not even recognized by other states that recognize gay marriage – because it isn’t marriage. But we wanted a union, and this was the best that was available to us at the time. But now we want to be married – fully. How is it possible in this day and age, and in this great country, that the two of us are not equal citizens? How is it that I pay just as many taxes, obey just as many laws, vote just as many times as my straight counter-parts and yet I’m not allowed to have the same rights? How is it that MY LOVE IS LESS THAN SOMEONE ELSE’S? How dare anyone judge me based on their faith? How dare a government that was created to work for the people, work against them?
I am marching on Sunday because I love Keith with every ounce of who I am. I am marching on Sunday because I deserve the right to have the same rights as everyone else in this country. I am marching on Sunday because we deserve to be married. I am marching on Sunday because there are generations behind me that might not have to march if I do. So come join us on Sunday if you can. If you can’t, sign up with the march in support of those of us that are going to be there. Sign up and attach your name to the Civil Rights battle of this generation. Stand up with me and shout until your hoarse. Stand up with me and DEMAND equal rights for everyone.

go read their blog – really. RSS it, the whole nine.
wanna live in the city but not really feel like you are living in the city?

where would they build this new park? under the elevated subway?
one of my favorite secret keepers has come up with yet another brilliant idea: a local Brunch & Supper Club. what better way to get to know the neighbors to your North & South, East & West, than over some yummy food and plenty of drink!
from the group invite:
A club to bring together the young professionals of our community; and foster growing relationships between the new and old residents of our historic neighborhood.
knowing how fabulous Claudio is, i am sure there will be lots of excellent restaurants on his venue list. hopefully some of them will be kid friendly. (hint! hint!)
join the WaHi/Inwood Brunch & Supper Club now.
want to get to know the host before the events roll around?

read Live Above Mediocrity, and
follow Claudio Cabrera on twitter.
we’ll be adding this one permanently to the sidebar.
