Invitation: Hike The Heights 6

get out your most comfortable walking shoes and join the hundreds of people that will be at Hike The Heights 6 this Saturday.  there will be a hiking group gathering at RING Garden at 10am that will hike it out to Highbridge Park.

See below & website for details.

Inwood Hoops will be there and we need a few volunteers to help us carry hoops down, hoop it out with the locals, then get back home to Inwood. Consider it community service!

The Art Of The Bumrush

occasionally your favorite puerto rican gets really fucking bored. it is in those moments that we are inspired to do / create / organize something we had no idea we were going to do when we sat on the toilet this morning.

hence, the Inwood Bumrush was born.

it started on a snowy, winter day. we were all at home, bored out of our skulls, and someone on twitter said, “Anyone want to meet for a burger at Piper’s Kilt?”  Two hours later, the poor waiter was buried in cranberry vodkas and fried onion rings.

we did it again, and again:  surprising local eateries at the last minute with 10+ people.

the last one was at Caridad across from the library. 12 people showed up and our bill was about $200 (with tip!).

can we top that? i doubt it.

but it sure beats sitting in front of the tube yet another night.

the boss is home tonight (and by boss i very clearly mean my bill paying, food making, butt humping husband) so i’d  have to check with him to see if a bumrush is even possible since if he’s in a shitty mood it will never work.

this divide of power is what makes us strong, people.

ps: bumrushes are family friendly.

you’ve been warned.

update later.

Recruiting Local Teens for Free Theatre Program (@peoplestheatre1)

support local arts for our young people and help spread the word!

Dear Community Leaders,

We need your help to find a group of dedicated young people interested in making a difference in their community.

People’s Theatre Project, a local organization that offers theatre opportunities for the community, is looking for 15 high school aged participants for a Free Teen Theatre Ensemble Program called “If I Ruled the World”.

The program runs for 12 Saturday afternoons from 1-4pm beginning March 6 and ending May 22nd at J. Hood Wright Recreation Center on 173rd St. & Ft. Washington Ave.

Attached is a flyer for your use and below is some more information on the program. Please email or call me if you know of any students that would be interested in participating. Please feel free to forward this email to your contacts as well!

—————————————————————————————–

People’s Theatre Project announces a new theatre ensemble program for youth in Washington Heights and Inwood facilitated by local author Karen Gormandy. The participants will work together for 12 Saturday afternoons beginning March 6th to create a theatre piece that explores the idea “If I Ruled the World.” The first 6 weeks of the program will consist of dialogue on local and global issues affecting the community, writing the theatre piece, as well as discussions with professional theatre artists from various disciplines. The second half of the program is devoted to rehearsal and production. Participants lead all aspects of production from marketing to production design and performing.

We are looking for a group of 15 local high school aged artists, actors, musicians, dancers, directors, producers, designers and activists to be part of an ensemble that asks questions, seeks answers and speaks their mind. No experience necessary!

Sincerely,

Bob Braswell

UPDATE 2: Check out our community project in the Examiner!  Inwood Shines Bright: Northern Manhattan revives an old Christmas tradition”

Our friends and neighbors are decorating their windows, and bringing that old holiday spirit back to our streets once again. Send me your photos and we’ll show off our ‘hood to the world.

Also, f you are on Twitter, use the hashtags #InwoodShinesBright or #ISB so that I can retweet you.

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!

We live in THE BEST neighborhood in all of Manhattan – HAND’S DOWN.

We launched a brand new community project called Inwood Shines Bright! which asks neighbors to bring back old Inwood traditions and make them new again.

10034 is changing at a rapid fire pace, but we can still keep the old flames alive – the ones that brought us here to begin with.

read more about Inwood Shines Bright! on our header page, and what you can do to make our neighborhood a much brighter place this Holiday season.

our community is our family, and like most things in life we cant do it alone. we want to thank the following people for helping out  behind the scenes on such short notice:

Lyana of Latinos For Obama, Claudio of Live Above Mediocrity blog, and Jose of Joyful Addition blog.

also a special thanks everyone who has retweeted and helped spread the word.  we will be posting flyers around the neighborhood this week to reach to those not yet a part of our amazing online blogging community.

PSA: The Rat Zapper Is Your Friend

slideshow_1151771_rat-zapper

so, yeah. we’ve been battling mice for a while now.

mostly in our kitchen, but i found a dropping in the living room, where my babies play on the floor – and i can’t even tell you how freaked out i was for the few hours before our rat zapper fried that little fucker.

mice in the park – expected. mice in the home – NOT OKAY.

but now im recognizing a pattern:  Spring and Fall.

that’s when we seem to have them. otherwise we are totally clear.

why the surprise when i spotted droppings the other day, i have no idea.

but you don’t understand, i become obsessed. like a mad woman, determined to find where minxminnie is hanging out. and god forbid she tries to procreate.

not here, sweetheart. keep it moving.

and death threats to anyone who even thinks about dropping a random crumb.

chew with your mouth closed, damn.

so of course as soon as it gets cold, we have a kill. yes, this is unnerving, because i’ll keep searching for the next month or so, but comforted in knowing this thing will work when we are sleeping. up to 30 kills before you need to change the battery.

buy it, and have it overnighted.

those suckers won’t know what’s coming.

Inwood Capoeira – Highly Recommended

our friend, Camille, wrote this fantastic review of the Capoeira class that she went to the other night:

I just wanted to pass along that I went to the Capoeira class at Inwood Boxing Academy tonight.  Woo-wee!  For $15, I spent 90 minutes sweating profusely while looking like I was kicking butt and doing cartwheels.  Okay, it’s more than that, it’s a Brazilian martial art—fighting and dancing—that involves rhythm and coordination and muscles you didn’t even know you had.  I know—I KNOW—I’m gonna be sore tomorrow and there’s nothing I can do about that (maybe an Advil of four), but it’s the good kind of hurt.  You gotta check out the videos on Youtube, the girls have EIGHT-packs!

Tonight, the first class, it was just the Brazilian instructor, two guys, and me—I’ve never done this in my life, but I got the hang of it pretty quickly.  After a few warms ups, he showed us moves that include kicking and defending.  And then we got into the ring to practice partner work.  When it’s done right, it looks like a Twyla Tharp cage match.  The guy who was running the gym tonight, Joe, asked me to spread the word.  It’s Mondays & Wednesdays from 7:30-9pm.  $15 per class or $80 for the month which averages out to $10 a class.  I know it’s not as cheap as Planet Fitness, but I HATE running on a treadmill, plus I think I burned more calories.  A note: bring water and a towel.  YOU. WILL. SWEAT.

Capoeira classes are at the Inwood Boxing Academy – give them a call if you need more info, and tell them you read Camille’s recommendation on Manhattan’s Peak Blog!

The Uptown Connection

hurray!  there’s a new group here in our tiny little neighborhood called Inwood Networking Parents.  it’s a closed group on FB, so there’s no guarantee that we will be accepted and im now a member!.  regardless, here is the intro letter i wrote to the moderator on InwoodKids, and i wanted to extend the offer to all my Uptown readers.

Hello!  I am now a stay-at-home mommy blogger of twins and a teenage boy.  My Manhattan’s Peak blog focuses on everything fabulous and fun in Inwood, as well as the occasional post about our personal parenting trials & tribulations.  If anyone is looking for free local promotion or marketing (it’s what I call “Linky Love” on my blog) I would gladly put a post up on your behalf.   I get a couple of hundred hits a day, mostly from my local readership base which includes Inwood, the Heights, Harlem and Marble Hill. The tone of my blog is very, very laid back and conversational.  This is a place where my friends meet, and most of my friends in both “real life” and “online” live uptown.  My husband has been nudging me lately about making some money via a “blogging from home” situation, so FYI I might put some advertising up on my sidebar in the near future.

My plan is to request to join the facebook Inwood Networking Parents group today, and will request your permission before posting any referrals on Manhattan’s Peak blog. Also note that my blog URLs are also automatically imported into my twitter feed and facebook account, so anything posted will be far reaching within my extended network.

Word of mouth via local blog posts spread like wildfire up here, and I’d love to help any Uptownies out if I can.

Please email me offline if you are interested in getting your business posted.  manhattanspeak at gmail dot com

in this economy, we can all use a little free help these days.  expect to see me shilling my own baby goods up for sale, and yes, it’s true – im considering putting ads up on the blog.  i know! im selling out! there goes my gangsta lean, right? but we have 3 kids and 2 dogs to feed, so i might as well put this blog to good use in some way, shape or form. it’s kind of unfair for my husband to handle the entire financial load all by himself.

and if i can help a neighbor out in doing so, then why the hell not?

update: Susan asked a great question – you DO NOT need to be a parent to have a post put up on my blog, just a local business owner or self employed.  you must request an invite to the FB group i linked which i am not at all associated with, unless im approved and then i will be a member. also, i will gladly put up any IRL friends info even if you dont live uptown.  friends take care of each other!

check out more linky love on my sidebar.

JOIN: Wahi/Inwood Brunch & Supper Club

one of my favorite secret keepers has come up with yet another brilliant idea:  a local Brunch & Supper Club. what better way to get to know the neighbors to your North & South, East & West, than over some yummy food and plenty of drink!

from the group invite:

A club to bring together the young professionals of our community; and foster growing relationships between the new and old residents of our historic neighborhood.

knowing how fabulous Claudio is, i am sure there will be lots of excellent restaurants on his venue list.  hopefully some of them will be kid friendly. (hint! hint!)

join the WaHi/Inwood Brunch & Supper Club now.

want to get to know the host before the events roll around?

Join InwoodBabies2009

ok breeders, let’s be real:

after a while your cute little kid gets a bit bored of you, and your stories, and your songs, and your coochiecoochiecoo’s.

and there’s only so MANY DAYS of 1-upping your partner that a person can stand (even in the healthiest of relationships!)

that said, if you are the parent of a baby born in the Year Of The Obama,  join the InwoodBabies2009 yahoo group so we can schedule playdates, swap stuff, and recommend our favorite things to other newbie parents.

because a neighborhood group is whatever we choose to make it!
