It’s a new #Inwood forum! For young people! No offense, #WaHi.

RT @adampknave: Dear #inwood I bring you www.inwoodforum.com for your use. Go play, register, enjoy. Give me ideas to improve it. Let’s grow this.

Change starts with us, no? While the “WaHi” forum likes to, um, dwell on how shit used to be uptown… we hope our new, younger, less argumentative peers come play on Adam’s new forum.

also, who doesnt love that FOODING is on the top of his list???

“What Is Your Dream?”

it’s amazing that we live in a society where having arts programs in our schools is optional. unfortunately for many New York City public schools, this is exactly the case. how can we truly cultivate imagination if basic art & music classes arent available to the next generation?

If it weren’t for the VH1 Save The Music program, my teenager would not be playing the three instruments he had to teach himself by ear because as a single mom i could not afford the private classes he really needed.

so when our friend Lizzi told us about a fundraiser her daughter’s school is having – it was a no brainer to post this to you guys and personally ask you for help to save the art program at Hamilton Heights Academy.

will you please buy a $10 ticket and help a child in this school live out their artistic dream? it’s okay if you can’t make it to the actual program – we would just like sell as many tickets as possible. all proceeds go to the arts program.

here’s a note from Lizzi’s husband on the Friends Of Hamilton Heights School website:

What Is Your Dream?

Our dream is to bring our beloved arts program back where it belongs at HHS!

Help turn this dream into a reality by attending our Spring talent show. Hamilton Heights families, teachers, and staff will be performing and you won’t want to miss it.  Bring the whole family — fun for everyone!  An evening beyond your wildest dreams!

Save the Date!

Sunday, March 21, 2010
5:00-7:00 PM
Riverbank State Park Auditorium

Tickets are $10 each ($5 for children under 12) and will not be sold at the door.  Save your seats now by clicking the large “buy tickets now” button to the left.

With your help, dreams can come true!

Fundraising for Art Programs

Since its inception Hamilton Heights has successfully incorporated the arts into its curriculum. Our teachers believe that art helps to create independent, self-confident thinkers.

Classroom teachers have worked independently and with teaching artists and local organizations like the “Children’s Art Carnival” to encourage student creativity and provide outlets for self-expression. HHS students take pride in their art work and enjoy using their visual skills to connect the academic and social curriculum.

What Your Support Will Mean to HHS

Our school has been severely affected by education budget cuts which have forced us to eliminate our prized and important art program. Art continues in classrooms thanks to our dedicated teachers but we have lost our Teaching Artists and our partnerships with Children’s Arts Carnival and Studio in a School.  Here’s what your support can do for our students:

$20 A pack of pastel crayons for one student
$50 Construction paper for one HHS classroom
$100 Twenty scissors for one HHS classroom
$250 One year’s worth of art instruction for one student
$500 All supplies for a semester’s worth of art in one classroom
$1,000 Monthly salary of a Teaching Artist

Make a contribution of $100 or more and receive our world famous HHS T-shirt as a special gift!

Your donation is 100% tax deductible to the extent provided by the Internal Revenue Service under the 501(c)3 non-profit code.

Recruiting Local Teens for Free Theatre Program (@peoplestheatre1)

support local arts for our young people and help spread the word!

Dear Community Leaders,

We need your help to find a group of dedicated young people interested in making a difference in their community.

People’s Theatre Project, a local organization that offers theatre opportunities for the community, is looking for 15 high school aged participants for a Free Teen Theatre Ensemble Program called “If I Ruled the World”.

The program runs for 12 Saturday afternoons from 1-4pm beginning March 6 and ending May 22nd at J. Hood Wright Recreation Center on 173rd St. & Ft. Washington Ave.

Attached is a flyer for your use and below is some more information on the program. Please email or call me if you know of any students that would be interested in participating. Please feel free to forward this email to your contacts as well!

—————————————————————————————–

People’s Theatre Project announces a new theatre ensemble program for youth in Washington Heights and Inwood facilitated by local author Karen Gormandy. The participants will work together for 12 Saturday afternoons beginning March 6th to create a theatre piece that explores the idea “If I Ruled the World.” The first 6 weeks of the program will consist of dialogue on local and global issues affecting the community, writing the theatre piece, as well as discussions with professional theatre artists from various disciplines. The second half of the program is devoted to rehearsal and production. Participants lead all aspects of production from marketing to production design and performing.

We are looking for a group of 15 local high school aged artists, actors, musicians, dancers, directors, producers, designers and activists to be part of an ensemble that asks questions, seeks answers and speaks their mind. No experience necessary!

Sincerely,

Bob Braswell

Angel Figueroa introduces @InwoodSafety

On Feb 1st, Angel and his daughter saw the cops tend to a guy who was bloodied during a robbery in Isham Park. He immediately went on Twitter to tell us all what he saw, and quickly gathered a group of locals who were as furious as he is about the lack of policing in our neighborhood.

There is going to be a full story in the Manhattan Times, but you don’t need to wait that long to follow how this is developing. Angel created a twitter account called InwoodSafety (a spanish translated twitter acct will come soon as well), and if you ive up here and want to follow what people in our neighborhood are doing to make a difference, or get involved directly, you should follow/show support of this group. Read what the group is saying RIGHT NOW on the #InwoodSafety hashtag and watch your neighbors kick some ass.

if you are looking for a local community service project, this is it.

update: waiting to get more information for neighbors not on twitter but would like to participate and/or would like regular updates. stay tuned…

Dear Manhattan Times: On Twitter

so, do you remember my letter to the Manhattan Times a month ago? the one where i requested 3 things to make the MT more blogger friendly?

well, they are all over it.

here’s what i asked for on our behalf:

1. Add A Share Button to online articles – we’d love to shout from the top of our keyboard any single thing we’ve read and a share button is the fastest way to do it right from our open window.

2. Include hyperlinks within online articles – bloggers and nonbloggers have had orgasms over links. no really. for instance, i know ive had a great session when after 10 clicks i forgot what the original article was.  i need to make a t-shirt that says IheartHYPERlinks asap.

3. Twitter, of course. everything is happening in 140 characters. your tweet thread is THE new blog. i want to know what is going on quick, fast, & simple. then i want to retweet the shit out of it so everyone else knows too.

so big huzzah to Manhattan Times for starting a twitter feed. tell them you love them immediately via tweet. the people on their team have worked long and hard for our online community – show them your appreciation by giving them a follow –> @ManhattanTimes.

now where’s my DanBaderForCB12Chair button?

A club to bring together the young professionals of our community; and foster growing relationships between the new and old residents of our historic neighborhood.

Inwood Romantic Date Nights Continue with DRACULA!

the banner below says “drink responsibly” so is that like condoning the consumption of alcohol in the park on the sly? because we are notorious for bringing a great bottle of wine to these wonderful outdoor performances.

Opens Wednesday July 15!

Join InwoodBabies2009

ok breeders, let’s be real:

after a while your cute little kid gets a bit bored of you, and your stories, and your songs, and your coochiecoochiecoo’s.

and there’s only so MANY DAYS of 1-upping your partner that a person can stand (even in the healthiest of relationships!)

that said, if you are the parent of a baby born in the Year Of The Obama,  join the InwoodBabies2009 yahoo group so we can schedule playdates, swap stuff, and recommend our favorite things to other newbie parents.

because a neighborhood group is whatever we choose to make it!

Quality of Life issues? MAKE THE CALL

posted by a parent on inwoodkids, now is your chance to be heard:

While I was out of town this past week, I had the pleasure of receiving a phone call from Manhattan Borough President’s assistant, Jaritza.  She was following up with me (and others) about the meeting we attended last week.

I came away from this conversation very encouraged about Stringer’s sincere desire to help our community improve the quality of life issues that have been plaguing us for quite some time.

She informed me that the first meeting of the Night Life Committee (that I referenced in my previous post about the CB 12 meeting) will most likely be sometime the week of June 22; I will keep you posted but encourage you to be proactive and call CB 12 to be placed on their e-mailing list.  212-568-8500

I also was very glad to hear her say that they “want individual complaints about noise” so that they can be specific when they address the problems as they become aware.  Stringer wants to work with other agencies outside of the economically strapped NYPD to look for solutions.

So, this is your chance to be heard.  This is your chance to make a difference by getting on the phone and talking with her, one on one.  She is a delightful woman and is genuinely concerned about the goings-on in this area.

You should call Jaritza at 212-531-2277.  I cannot stress enough how much she stressed that she wanted to hear from us; she wants to get a log of individual complaints.  If you have 311 issues, let her know.  If you’ve had problems with police interactions, let her know.  If you deal with noise, let her know.

I asked at the last CB 12 meeting, ‘what can we do to be part of the solution?’  And here is one step towards being part of the solution.

Please take a moment this week and call her.

this assistant has no idea how inundated she is going to be this week. remember, she is trying to help us so please be nice.

represent.

Sup and Sack in the Sunset, 6/12 @ 5:30pm

My husband is desperate for a date night, and I keep turning him down. I know, I know, “dating” your partner is healthy, but you can’t pry me away from these new babies even if your life depended on it.  Well, with one exception…

The only event in our neighborhood I would even consider leaving my brood, or buying a new sling for is this one:

The 10th Anniversary Celebration Fundraiser

For Inwood Shakespeare Festival

In Inwood Hill Park Peninsula

Sup&SackintheSunsetPoster

How many summer nights have we escaped to the peninsula, blankets & picnic baskets in tow, to watch another fabulous performance by the Inwood Shakespeare Festival?  Or how about those warm nights, when we are taking our evening stroll around the park with our pooches only to be drawn to the beautiful music floating over the salt marsh?

Inwoodites, we have to come out for this one in droves.

SUPPORT OUR BELOVED INWOOD SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL!!

Let’s mix and mingle, sip on a cocktail, and eat a snack donated from some of our favorite local restaurants!  It’s time to enjoy yet another romantic evening on Lover’s Lane, perhaps dance to some live music… and it’s all right here in our own little ‘hood.

Tickets are available for $30 online via PayPal and will also be sold for $35 at the door.

Please visit the Moosehall Theater Company website or join the Sup and Sack Facebook group for more info.

Buy your tix, pick up something summery, and spread the word!  See you there!!
