support local arts for our young people and help spread the word!

Dear Community Leaders,

We need your help to find a group of dedicated young people interested in making a difference in their community.

People’s Theatre Project, a local organization that offers theatre opportunities for the community, is looking for 15 high school aged participants for a Free Teen Theatre Ensemble Program called “If I Ruled the World”.

The program runs for 12 Saturday afternoons from 1-4pm beginning March 6 and ending May 22nd at J. Hood Wright Recreation Center on 173rd St. & Ft. Washington Ave.

Attached is a flyer for your use and below is some more information on the program. Please email or call me if you know of any students that would be interested in participating. Please feel free to forward this email to your contacts as well!

People’s Theatre Project announces a new theatre ensemble program for youth in Washington Heights and Inwood facilitated by local author Karen Gormandy. The participants will work together for 12 Saturday afternoons beginning March 6th to create a theatre piece that explores the idea “If I Ruled the World.” The first 6 weeks of the program will consist of dialogue on local and global issues affecting the community, writing the theatre piece, as well as discussions with professional theatre artists from various disciplines. The second half of the program is devoted to rehearsal and production. Participants lead all aspects of production from marketing to production design and performing.

We are looking for a group of 15 local high school aged artists, actors, musicians, dancers, directors, producers, designers and activists to be part of an ensemble that asks questions, seeks answers and speaks their mind. No experience necessary!

Sincerely,

Bob Braswell

The Heights & Inwood: Good, local history

this story was posted on a parents group this morning, and i wanted to reprint in full as it was incredibly inspiring to me on this dreary Monday morning:

You may (or may not) have noticed that each of the elevators now has one poster with a gray background, and that that poster is done by a local artist. There’s a story behind this, a story of a tenacious, community-minded woman.

Years ago, one of the elevators at the 183rd St entrance to the A train was decorated with dozens of photos of local residents, holiday lights at appropriate times of year, and music. This was the work of Bruce, one of the operators. The friendly, eclectic décor inspired newspaper articles both here and abroad. Then the MTA decided it was all a fire hazard, and possibly a violation of peoples’ privacy, everything was removed.

The community banded together to get the decorations reinstated, signing petitions and staging a protest march at the train station. (Marching around with placards and chanting is one of my kids’ earliest memories; they periodically re-enact the scene when I come up with a new schedule of chores!) The MTA was intransigent. However, Rosa Naparstek, working together with Artists Unite, was determined to keep a community feel within the elevators. With perseverence and dozens upon dozens of meetings with the MTA, slowly but surely progress was made.

The exhibit that documents this eight-year battle is titled “Going Up! The Art in Your Subway Elevator and the Story of How it Got There”. It opens at Hebrew Tabernacle (on the northern side of Bennett Park @ Ft Washington) on Sunday, Nov 29, with a reception from 2-6pm. Additional hours are Monday, Nov 30 and Wed, Dec 2 (9am-6:30pm), Sat, Dec 5 (7-9pm) and Sun, Dec 6 (10am-1pm)

It’s a great story, well worth your time. And Rosa… well, Rosa is someone worth meeting. She’s certainly taught me a thing or two about what it means to be determined!

god, i love my ‘hood.

Reminder: Inwood Canoe Club is FREE each Sunday

remember when we put you on to kayaking in the ‘hood last summer?  well, it’s that time of year again!  the Inwood Canoe Club website has had a nice little makeover, now with specific directions via google maps -  just in case you had a hard time finding our little off-the-beaten-path neighborhood gem.

shhh – don’t tell the downtownies.  let’s keep this our local [little] secret.

kayaking at the Inwood Canoe Club is free on Sundays, 10am – noon.

Sup and Sack in the Sunset, 6/12 @ 5:30pm

My husband is desperate for a date night, and I keep turning him down. I know, I know, “dating” your partner is healthy, but you can’t pry me away from these new babies even if your life depended on it.  Well, with one exception…

The only event in our neighborhood I would even consider leaving my brood, or buying a new sling for is this one:

The 10th Anniversary Celebration Fundraiser

For Inwood Shakespeare Festival

In Inwood Hill Park Peninsula

Sup&SackintheSunsetPoster

How many summer nights have we escaped to the peninsula, blankets & picnic baskets in tow, to watch another fabulous performance by the Inwood Shakespeare Festival?  Or how about those warm nights, when we are taking our evening stroll around the park with our pooches only to be drawn to the beautiful music floating over the salt marsh?

Inwoodites, we have to come out for this one in droves.

SUPPORT OUR BELOVED INWOOD SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL!!

Let’s mix and mingle, sip on a cocktail, and eat a snack donated from some of our favorite local restaurants!  It’s time to enjoy yet another romantic evening on Lover’s Lane, perhaps dance to some live music… and it’s all right here in our own little ‘hood.

Tickets are available for $30 online via PayPal and will also be sold for $35 at the door.

Please visit the Moosehall Theater Company website or join the Sup and Sack Facebook group for more info.

Buy your tix, pick up something summery, and spread the word!  See you there!!

Silly Rabbit, Buy The Box!

the first time I went to daniel’s bachelor pad he had a TV set with a turn knob (late 1980′s?) and this long ass cord running from his living room, through the hall, pass the bathroom, through the length of his bedroom – and at the very end, there, perched on his window, were rabbit ears.  i thought he was nuts.  i teased him relentlessly about it cause I’m a bit of a gadget geek.  plus, god forbid you touched the wire – he would have a heart attack because it totally screwed up his reception.

if this set up sounds familiar, and you havent bought a converter yet – today is your lucky day!  newly engaged inwood blogger, Ethan Ham, is selling his brand new soon-to-be-required Digital TV Converter for next to nothing:

I recently bought a DTV converter box (so that I could use my bunny ears to get tv after February broadcast change). However, after getting the box, I decided to bite the bullet and get cable tv.

So, I can simply return the box to RadioShack, but I’ve been hearing that the $40 coupons have run out… So I thought it would be nicer to see if someone needs & wants the unopened box before taking it back.

I purchased it for $59.60 (including tax), of which $40 was covered by the federal coupon.  If someone is interested in reimbursing the $19.60 out-of-pocket expense, I’d love to give them the box.

I’d like to emphasize I’m not trying to make a profit on this! (And will provide whoever wants the box the sales receipt to show that).

i am a super huge advocate of local bartering, freecycling and purchasing fabulous creations from our talented neighbors – so many thanks to Ethan for offering this up to our readers before listing it elsewhere.

if you are interested,  email Ethan about the converter box TODAY.

Last Night at the Piper’s Kilt…

The Piper’s Kilt is my bar. It’s just that simple to me. I think everyone should have a bar to call their own, a place where they feel comfortable, at ease and at home. A place that waits for them at the end of a long day, a place of refuge, sanctuary, celebration, release and relief. For me, that place is the Kilt. So I knew that, one way or another, I was going to wind up there on Election Night.

I put the word out, invited some fellow locals to join me there to watch the returns, the speeches, see how it all ended. And then I was promptly late for the party.
