The Piper’s Kilt is my bar. It’s just that simple to me. I think everyone should have a bar to call their own, a place where they feel comfortable, at ease and at home. A place that waits for them at the end of a long day, a place of refuge, sanctuary, celebration, release and relief. For me, that place is the Kilt. So I knew that, one way or another, I was going to wind up there on Election Night.
I put the word out, invited some fellow locals to join me there to watch the returns, the speeches, see how it all ended. And then I was promptly late for the party.
I was at this U.M.E. event this evening and who should I run into but the very folks putting together the Haunted Forest and House in Inwood Hill Park! How fortuitious! I got a sneak peek at the plans, which are truly righteous and scary. But most important of all…(drum roll, please!)
They’re still looking for volunteers, so go check it out!
First, we never said YAY to J taking over the main duties for the UME. We love Josh, and glad he’s still on board – but it’s nice to see J’s face as the head-dude in charge. rock on man, rock on.
J. posted this on the UME message board this morning, and thought you guys would want to give any ideas of your own. so, what’s your plan for halloween?
Hey all! J., one of your friendly neighborhood U.M.E. organizers here. A couple of different folks have brought up the idea of what to do on Halloween. I figured I’d throw open the floor and see if there were any particular events that people wanted to do that weekend. There are a couple of things going already that I know about:
- The Piper’s Kilt is holding its annual Halloween Costume Contest on Sunday, Oct. 26th (along with karaoke)…
- Inwoof (the Inwood Dog Owners’ group) is sponsoring an doggie costume contest…
- There’s usually a Haunted forest in Inwood Hill Park…
- Though it’s not in the neighborhood, plenty of people head downtown for the big Greenwich Village Halloween Parade…
So, sound off!
- The crew at the U.M.E.
it’s a friday night – so there is no reason why you would be home. get your ass off the sofa and have some fun!!
UME is back to a full calendar which means you have absolutely no excuse.

It was a long, nice, quiet summer, wasn’t it? Free of angst and nail-biting tension. It was a time when Tuesday nights meant lazy walks around the salt marsh, holding hands with your sweetie, not frantically trying to remember whether there was a Backstreet Boy named Nick or not (There was). Ah, the halycon days of summer…
Those days are over. Because Trivia Night is back at the Piper’s Kilt. Aw, yeah. And that means your weekly trivia night update is back, too. So get used to it.
There have been a couple of changes at the ol’ Piper’s Kilt trivia. Some team members went and had kids. Some have moved onto new locales (we miss ya!). But the Army of One endures. And grows, in fact. One of the new rule changes is you can have as many people on your team as you want. No more five person limit. And we took advantage, nearly fielding a baseball team. I do fear that this will lead to spiraling arms race, where teams grow ever larger until half of the bar is playing the other half of the bar, wars break out, truces need to be negotiated. I pray we don’t reach that point. But it would be exciting!
The game was its usual useless knowledge festival. Who knew that this wasn’t one of these? (We didn’t.) Or that this guy’s middle name wasn’t the same as this guy’s? (We did.) It was a tough scrap, but the Army of Everyone in the Damn Bar pulled out a nice win to start the season. So, woo hoo! But the games have just begun…
these are the last few sundays that the weather will be kind enough for kickball games in the park. take advantage of them, will ya?
anyone can play – just roll on up and tell somebody you want in. you’ll be put on a team and ready to go in no time.
or, just go and hang out and be a cheerleader. the games are a riot. and well, it’s illegal to drink in the park and all, but this group will tell you they didnt see a thing.

Subject: [socialnetwork-488] New Meetup: The U.M.E. Volunteers for the Inwood Kids Olympics!
What: The U.M.E. Volunteers for the Inwood Kids Olympics!
When: August 7, 2008 6:00 PM
Where: Click the link below to find out!
Meetup Description: From the message boards, to the calendar! Mary Kate figured it would be easier to organize volunteers as an event. In case you missed it on the boards, here’s the info:
Diane Ninos and Cindy Burke are coordinating a free Inwood Olympics Event
to be held on Thursday Aug 7th between 6-8 in Isham Park. The purpose is to raise
awareness of the Beijing Olympics which begin on Aug. 8th.
It is open to children up to age 10 to actually participate as atheletes. It will include
the lighting of the torch, some local little chinese dancers in costume doing the ribbon dance, a parade of athletes, competitions at 4 venues set up in Isham Park based on age and an award ceremony where the athletes will receive gold medals and laurel wreaths. All participating athletes will receive a goody bag.
We are publisizing this on the Inwood Kids web site and by word of mouth. We are preparing medals etc. for up to 100 kids. We do not want more than that to show up and be disappointed. Before the event we could use volunteers to help with making ribbon wands, laurel wreaths and filling goody bags.
On the day of the event we can use help in setting up the decorations, captains and helpers at the 4 venues. We would also like volunteers for clean up.
Thanks so much for your support!
When you RSVP, let us know what you’re interested in doing…

Our Second Annual 4th of July Picnic in Inwood Hill Park!
Bring friends, family, aunts uncles, dogs, cats, iguanas. Kids too! If we have enough interested people we might try a pick up game of kickball or frisbe.
Bring a dish to share (or drinks, etc.) We’ll find an appropriate picnic place when we get there, and just hang out and meet your neighbors!
We’ll meet at two locations, 218th St. and Indian Road, and also at the main Gates of Inwood Hill Park at Isham St. and Seaman Ave. We’ll leave a sign/ directions for latecomers to find us!
If anyone has a folding table that can be set up in the park, please contact Claudia. Also, bring your blankets and sheets to sit on!
